Proust Questionnaire & Reflection

__1.__What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Being perfectly happy with whatever is in your life at the moment.

__2.__What is your greatest fear?

This is a little irrational, but my greatest fear is waking up to find that the people you know don’t remember you because I would feel really trapped if that happened.

__3.__What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

I procrastinate and have a hard time getting started on things. It doesn’t seem like something that’s difficult to overcome, but I have found myself staying up late to finish assignments I could have finished long ago because of it.

__4.__What is the trait you most deplore in others?

A lack of empathy.

__5.__Which living person do you most admire?

I admire my mom because she goes out of her way to support and bring up her loved ones.

__6.__What is your greatest extravagance? Snacks! I’m always eating snack. I have everything from healthy food that’s actually sustaining to junk food.

__7.__What is your current state of mind?

A mix of a lot of different things. I can’t really pin down a way to describe it, but it’s a little cluttered.

__8.__What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

“Boldness” which is different from courage. Courage can be shown in ways that aren’t necessarily bold.

__9.__On what occasion do you lie?

I try not to.

My nose.

__11.__Which living person do you most despise? Anyone who lets success/fame/their own desires get to their head and forgets that they are also human beings.

__12.__What is the quality you most like in a man?

Being understanding, because that’s the key to basically all the relationships in your life and people (myself included) can generally stand to be a little more understanding of what others go through.

__13.__What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Being loving, because if a woman brings forth that quality in herself and into her life, she can strongly impact the people around her.

__14.__Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

“Aw” , “Wait”

__15.__What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Hula. It is something I grew up doing and I met and experienced a lot of the people and things I love today through it.

__16.__When and where were you happiest? When I was five years old and I was an airport in Burma about to see the rest of my family for the first time.

__17.__Which talent would you most like to have?

I wish I was smart enough to get good grades without studying because it would give me more time to do other things I like.

__18.__If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

My procrastination habit.

__19.__What do you consider your greatest achievement? No really great achievements here.

__20.__If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?

I think it would be most useful for me to come back as a person. Humans can bring about the most change in the world right now and I could help others through this power.

I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else but here.

__22.__What is your most treasured possession? My skirt from a hula competition with my old hālau because I miss them and I barely get to see them.

Reflection

Q: What Questions did you struggle with the most?

A: I struggled with answering questions number 19 and 25. 25 could be thought of in a lot of different ways and I don’t think anyone usually considers what their most defining characteristic is. 19 was difficult too, but I put the answer that I did because my life thus far has been made up of many small good things. There are a lot of memorable moments I could name, and many stand out to me but none of them are like a single crowning achievement type of moment.

Q: What questions could you change your answers to in 5 years?

A: I could see myself having different answers for number 7 and 18. For 7, a person’s state of mind changes pretty easily depending on where they are in life and what they’re doing, and I think being in college (hopefully med school) would lead to a change in my mindsets, etc. Number 18 was also difficult for the same reasons. Maybe further on in my life procrastination won’t really effect me anymore and I might have other things I think I need to work on.

Q: What answers surprised you the most?

A: The answers to questions 2 and 21 were the most surprising to me. I always thought my greatest fear would be something like deep water or bugs–which I still am–but it turns out that I fear losing the people I love more. Number 21 was surprising because, again, I had thought about moving to Europe or somewhere really pretty and not in the U.S. However, I realized that I like it here and I wouldn’t want to live where I couldn‘t revisit my favorite people and places.

Q: What answers came to you by instinct?

A: The answers to 16 and 24 came to me easily. Seeing my grandparents for the first time was one of the things I remember most fondly. For number 24, I have always had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do in my life–help others–and I think being a doctor is the best way I can channel that.

Question to Consider: On what occasion do you lie?

I don’t know if anyone has gone their entire life without lying, but there are a lot of people who are truthful and sincere to themselves and in circumstances involving others. This is different from being brutally honest to the point of hurting people’s feelings. The people I’m thinking of are able to live more freely and have better relationships with others. Because no matter how big or small the lie, lying takes a toll on you. To not have that weight on your shoulders as you go through life is something I aspire to achieve. But I also can’t say that I have never lied, so the answer that is closest would be that I try my best not to.
